Jesus used a farming image to describe the most counterintuitive truth in the universe: "Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds." A seed's greatest potential is unlocked not by being preserved but by being planted. A seed kept in a jar stays a single seed forever. A seed planted — surrendered to the soil, to darkness, to a process it cannot control — becomes something exponentially more. Jesus was describing His own death first. He was the kernel of wheat that would fall into the ground so that countless lives could be saved. But He was also describing the principle that governs every life surrendered to Him. The laid-down life is not a lesser life. It is a more fruitful one. This is why Scripture seems so full of paradoxes: lose your life to save it, die to self to truly live, give to receive, serve to lead. These are not spiritual riddles. They are descriptions of how God's kingdom actually operates. The person who holds onto their life — who protects their comfort, their plans, their reputation at every cost — will produce little. The person who lays their life down for God and others — who is willing to be planted in difficult soil, to go through seasons of darkness and process — will eventually produce fruit that multiplies beyond what they can count. This is the invitation of a poured-out life. Not a diminished life. A laid-down life. A life that, like a seed, gives up what it is in order to become what God intended.
