When Jesus's disciples asked Him to teach them to pray, He did not give them a technique. He gave them a posture. The prayer He offered — what we call the Lord's Prayer — begins with a startling alignment: "Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven." Before any personal requests, before asking for daily bread or forgiveness, Jesus places the will of God front and center. Your kingdom come. Your will be done. This is alignment at its most essential level. Prayer is not primarily a tool for getting what we want from God. It is a practice that aligns our heart with His. When we pray sincerely, something happens to us — our perspective shifts, our desires are refined, our will bends toward His. The people who spend the most time in prayer are not the ones who get everything they ask for. They are the ones who gradually find that what they are asking for is changing — becoming less self-centered, more kingdom-focused, more in line with what God actually wants. "Your will be done" is one of the most courageous prayers a person can pray. It requires trust. It requires releasing control over outcomes we care deeply about. It requires believing that God's will, even when it differs from ours, is genuinely good. Jesus prayed this prayer Himself in the garden before the cross. If anyone had a reason to want a different outcome, it was Him. But He prayed, "Not my will but Yours." And through that surrender, the greatest rescue in human history took place. Aligning your prayer life with God's will is not giving up. It is plugging into the most powerful force in the universe.
