Getting Back on Track
One of the most gracious statements in the entire Old Testament comes from Joel 2:12-13: "'Even now,' declares the Lord, 'return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.' Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity." "Even now." Even after the choices you made. Even after the season of wandering. Even after the silence between you and God that has gone on longer than you intended. Even now, the door is open and God is calling you back. The phrase "rend your heart and not your garments" is a call to genuine, internal repentance rather than external performance. In Old Testament culture, tearing your clothes was a public display of grief and mourning. God is saying: I am not interested in the outward show. I want your actual heart. Getting back on track with God is always simpler than we make it. We often delay returning because we feel we need to clean ourselves up first, do penance, or prove we are serious. But God's character is gracious and compassionate — He is not waiting for you to perform your way back. He is simply waiting for you to turn. Returning is a decision of the will followed by a posture of the heart. It is saying, "I have drifted, and I am choosing to turn back." That's it. The Father runs to meet the prodigal before the prodigal even finishes his rehearsed apology. Whatever has kept you at a distance from God lately — busyness, sin, discouragement, doubt — even now is a valid moment to return. He has not moved. He is waiting.
Joel 2:12-13
"'Even now,' declares the Lord, 'return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.' Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity."
Today's Prayer
Lord, I return to You today — even now, from wherever I have wandered. I bring my real heart, not a performance. Thank You that You are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and full of love. Receive me as I come. Amen.
Today's Action Step
Write a short, honest letter to God today — two or three paragraphs — describing where you are right now spiritually. Be completely honest. Then pray it as a prayer of return.

Hope.
Healing.
Empowerment.
