Giving What You Cannot Keep

The widow who gave two small coins at the temple treasury did not catch anyone's attention that day — except Jesus. As wealthy people dropped large amounts into the offering, she slipped in quietly and dropped two small copper coins worth almost nothing. But Jesus turned to His disciples and said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on." Jesus was not evaluating the amount. He was evaluating the proportion — and the posture. The wealthy gave from their surplus. She gave from her sustenance. She gave what she needed to keep. This woman becomes one of the most celebrated figures in the Gospels without saying a single recorded word. Her act of sacrificial giving spoke louder than any speech. There is a principle embedded in her story that challenges comfortable faith: the most meaningful giving is rarely what is comfortable. It is what stretches us. It is the time we give when we are already busy, the money we release when our own account feels tight, the love we extend when we are running low on emotional energy ourselves. When you give from your surplus, you do not really have to trust God. You still have plenty left. But when you give from your need — when you trust God with what you cannot afford to release — something remarkable happens to your faith. It grows. The widow gave what she could not keep — and her story has been told for two thousand years. What are you giving that stretches your faith?

Luke 21:3-4

"'Truly I tell you,' he said, 'this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.'"

Today's Prayer

Lord, give me the faith to give even when it costs me something real. Help me to release what I am clinging to and trust You to be enough. May my giving reflect genuine trust, not just convenient surplus. Amen.

Today's Action Step

Find one specific way to give generously this week that genuinely requires trust — financially, with your time, or through an act of service that stretches you.
