Mordecai's words to Esther in the middle of a crisis are some of the most quoted in the entire Old Testament: "And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?" Esther was a Jewish orphan who had become queen of Persia — a story of improbable providence. And now, in the moment when her people faced extinction, Mordecai confronted her with the possibility that her whole journey had been leading to exactly this moment. The phrase "for such a time as this" has become a shorthand in Christian culture for purposeful placement. But it is worth sitting with more deeply. The idea is that God is not indifferent to where He places us. He is not randomly distributing people across the earth and hoping things work out. He is a sovereign God who positions His people with intentionality, placing them in specific families, specific cities, specific seasons, and specific roles — and then calling on them to act. All of it is on purpose. This means today matters. This year matters. Esther could have stayed quiet and tried to protect herself. But she chose to act on her purpose — and a nation was saved. You are here for a reason. This season of your life is not an accident.
