I Am Light
When Jesus stood in the temple courts and declared, "I am the light of the world," He was making a bold and sweeping claim. Light, in Scripture, carries layers of meaning — it represents truth, life, direction, and the presence of God. In Genesis, the very first thing God created was light. In Revelation, there is no sun in the new city because Jesus Himself is its light. And here, in the middle of a festival crowd, Jesus points to Himself and says: I am that light. What does this mean for those who follow Him? He continues in the verse: "Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." This is a personal promise. Not just that the world has access to light — but that the person who follows Jesus has light for their own path. Darkness in Scripture is not just the absence of light. It represents confusion, lostness, and spiritual blindness. Many people today live in a kind of internal darkness — not knowing who they are, where they are going, or what is true. They have all the information in the world at their fingertips and still feel lost. Jesus does not offer information. He offers Himself. And in offering Himself, He offers light — the kind that illuminates not just the path ahead but the condition of our own hearts. Following Jesus means walking toward greater clarity, greater truth, and greater freedom from the confusion the world creates. It also means we do not have to figure everything out before we take the next step. You do not need to see the whole road — just the next step. Light is given for walking, not for standing still. And as you walk in the light of Christ, you begin to reflect that light into the lives around you. His light in you becomes light for others. Today, choose to follow closely. The closer you walk with Him, the brighter your path becomes.
John 8:12
"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'"
Today's Prayer
Jesus, thank You for being the Light of the world — and for being a light on my personal path. When confusion or darkness surrounds me, draw me close to You. Help me to follow You so closely that Your light shines in and through my life today. Show me the next step clearly. Amen.
Today's Action Step
