I Am Not Controlled by Fear

Second Timothy 1:7 delivers a direct and powerful declaration: "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." This verse is addressing something very specific — a spirit of fear. Fear has a spirit. It can settle into a person's life like a permanent resident, shaping decisions, limiting dreams, and draining peace. It whispers that you are not safe, that things will go wrong, that the worst is coming. But according to this verse, that spirit does not come from God. Let that sink in. The fear that paralyzes you, the anxiety that keeps you up at night, the dread that follows you into every decision — that is not a gift from your Father. God gave you something else entirely. He gave you power — the ability to act, to engage, to live boldly. He gave you love — the driving force that casts fear out when it is fully embraced. And He gave you a sound mind — a clear, settled, stable way of thinking that is not at the mercy of every frightening what-if. None of this means life has no danger. None of it means hard things will not happen. But it does mean you do not have to be controlled by the anticipation of hard things. Fear controls us when we let it make decisions for us — when we do not take the step, have the conversation, or pursue the calling because of what might go wrong. But you were not made to live in a cage of worst-case scenarios. You were made to live in the freedom that comes from trusting a God who holds your future. The next time fear speaks, remember where it came from — and remember what God has given you instead. You have been given power, love, and a sound mind. Walk in those gifts today, and refuse to let fear have the final word.

2 Timothy 1:7

"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."

Today's Prayer

Lord, I choose today not to be controlled by fear. Thank You that the spirit of fear is not from You. Fill me with the power, love, and sound mind that You have given me in Christ. Where fear has taken up residence in my life, drive it out with Your perfect love. Amen.

Today's Action Step

Identify one thing you have been avoiding because of fear. Take one small, concrete step toward it today — make the call, send the email, or have the conversation.
