I Am Not My Past

God said something remarkable to Israel — a people who had a long and complicated history, full of failure, rebellion, and regret: "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!" This is not God asking them to be irresponsible about history. This is God inviting them to stop being held hostage by it. There is a difference between learning from your past and being defined by it. Between acknowledging where you have been and letting it become your permanent address. Many people live in a state of emotional and spiritual time travel — constantly going back to what happened, what was done to them, what they did, what was lost. And while healing often requires processing the past, God is issuing an invitation here to look forward. He says "I am doing a new thing." Present tense. Right now. Already in motion. He even asks a question: "Do you not perceive it?" As if He is pointing to something happening in the middle of their story that they almost missed because they were too busy looking backward. Your past has shaped you — but it does not have to define you. The shame you carry, the mistakes you have made, the things done to you — none of those are the final word over your life. God specializes in new things. In the verse, He describes making a way in the desert and rivers in the wasteland. He is talking about life appearing in dead places. He is talking about your story not being over. Whatever your past holds, the God who makes new things is already at work in your present. You are not who you used to be. You are not who others said you were. You are the person God is making you into — and He is not done yet. Stop letting your past write your future. The new thing has already begun.

Isaiah 43:18-19

"'Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.'"

Today's Prayer

Lord, thank You that You are the God of new things. Help me to release the past — the regrets, the wounds, the shame — and fix my eyes on what You are doing right now. I am not my past. I am Yours. Lead me into the new thing You have already begun. Amen.

Today's Action Step

Write down one label from your past that you have allowed to define you. Then write over it: 'God is doing a new thing in me — Isaiah 43:19.' Keep it and refer to it when the old label tries to return.
