Letting Go of My Own Agenda
James 4:13-14 has a way of reading our mail: "Now listen, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.' Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." James is not criticizing planning or ambition. He follows this passage by saying, "Instead, you ought to say, 'If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that.'" The correction is not to stop planning — it is to stop planning without God. The phrase "if it is the Lord's will" is not a spiritual escape hatch or an excuse for passivity. It is a posture of genuine humility — an acknowledgment that while we make plans, God determines outcomes. Our agenda, however good it looks on paper, is always provisional. Always subject to His larger story. Many of us hold our agendas tightly because they feel like security. If I know where I am going and how I am getting there, I feel safe. But James gently punctures that illusion. You are a mist. Your life is brief, beautiful, and not fully in your control. That is not a dark truth — it is a liberating one. When you release your agenda to God, you stop carrying the weight of trying to control what you were never meant to control. You move through life with open hands, making plans but holding them loosely, ready to adjust when God redirects. The agenda you are gripping most tightly today may be the very thing God wants to redirect toward something better. Let it go. Trust Him with what comes next.
James 4:13-14
"Now listen, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.' Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes."
Today's Prayer
Lord, I acknowledge that my life is in Your hands, not mine. Help me to hold my plans loosely and to say with sincerity: 'If it is Your will.' Release me from the anxiety of controlling my future and help me rest in the One who holds it. Amen.
Today's Action Step
Write 'If it is the Lord's will' next to your top three goals for this week. Let it be a daily reminder that your plans are subject to His purposes.

Hope.
Healing.
Empowerment.
