The early church turned the economic assumptions of their world upside down: "All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need." This was not communism — it was community shaped by the Spirit. It was the natural overflow of people who had genuinely encountered the risen Christ and found that their grip on possessions had loosened dramatically. When you truly believe that God owns everything and that you are a steward, the idea of sharing freely stops being threatening and starts being natural. The early believers were not giving because of a rule or a tax. They were giving because love had changed their relationship to things. They had been seized by a reality larger than individual security, and generosity was the overflow. Living open-handed is a practice that runs against some of our deepest instincts. We are wired for self-preservation, for accumulation, for securing our own future. Openhandedness requires a deep trust — the belief that God is a better provider than our own hoarding. It requires the conviction that what we release becomes a seed rather than a loss, and that the return from generous living is richer than the security of tight-fisted accumulation. This does not mean financial recklessness. Wisdom and stewardship go together. But it does mean cultivating a posture in which what you have is genuinely available — to God's purposes, to people in need, to the advancement of His kingdom. Open your hand today.
