More Than a Song
God said something through the prophet Amos that challenged the comfortable religion of his day: "Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!" The people of Israel had plenty of religious activity — worship services, offerings, festivals. But their devotion was compartmentalized. Their worship was genuine on the surface and hollow at the core because it was disconnected from how they treated the poor, the vulnerable, and the marginalized. God called it noise. Worship that is "more than a song" is worship that flows out of Sunday morning and into Monday's decisions. It is devotion that shows up in how you do business, how you treat strangers, how you respond to the person everyone else overlooks. The measure of your worship is not the quality of your singing or the feeling you get during a service. It is the texture of your ordinary life throughout the week. This is a challenging word — but it is also a freeing one. It means that worship is accessible at every moment, not just in a church building. Feeding someone hungry is worship. Advocating for someone who cannot advocate for themselves is worship. Treating people with dignity and fairness is an act of devotion to a God who calls Himself the defender of the weak. Letting justice roll like a river in your life means that your relationship with God has so thoroughly shaped your character that it spills into every area of how you live, work, and relate. That is what poured-out looks like beyond the song.
Amos 5:23-24
"'Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!'"
Today's Prayer
Lord, help my worship to be more than a song. Let it flow out of Sunday and into every day of my week — in how I treat people, how I spend my resources, and how I respond to injustice. Let my life be the worship. Amen.
Today's Action Step
Find one concrete way to express worship through action this week — volunteer at a food pantry, advocate for someone who is overlooked, or simply treat a service worker with exceptional dignity and gratitude.

Hope.
