Nothing Held Back

When a religious expert tried to corner Jesus with a trick question about the greatest commandment, Jesus's answer was disarmingly simple: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." Three times the word "all" appears. All your heart. All your soul. All your mind. This is total love — nothing held back, nothing reserved, no part of yourself exempt from the devotion. It is the kind of love that leaves no room for a divided loyalty. The commandment was not new. Jesus was quoting Deuteronomy 6:5 — the Shema, which faithful Jewish people recited twice daily. But the application in His mouth carries fresh urgency. To love God with all your heart means your emotional life is oriented toward Him — your deepest affections, your greatest joys, your most profound attachments belong first to God. To love with all your soul means your very being, your truest self, is poured out in devotion. To love with all your mind means your thinking, your reasoning, your intellectual life is submitted to knowing and honoring Him. Most of us love God with most of ourselves, most of the time. We hold back certain corners — habits we are not ready to surrender, areas of our life where we have quietly kept God out. The invitation of this commandment is to examine those held-back corners and bring them into the full light of love. Loving with all of yourself does not happen in a moment. It is a direction — a journey of progressive surrender. But the goal is wholeness. No divided loyalties. No walled-off rooms. Nothing held back.

Matthew 22:37

"Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'"

Today's Prayer

Lord, I want to love You with all of myself — not just the parts I am comfortable offering. Show me where I am holding back and help me to bring those areas into full surrender. I want to love You completely. Amen.

Today's Action Step

Draw a simple diagram: a circle representing your life, divided into sections (work, relationships, finances, habits, time, etc.). Shade the sections you have fully surrendered to God. Pray over the unshaded areas.
