Obedience Over Understanding

Jesus said something simple and direct in John 14:15 that cuts to the heart of what it means to follow Him: "If you love me, keep my commands." He does not say, "If you understand me." He does not say, "If my commands make sense to you." He connects love and obedience — and He does it in that order. Love first, obedience as the natural overflow. Many people want to understand God's instruction before they obey it. This is understandable — we live in an age that values explanation and reasoned decision-making. But faith often calls us to obey before we fully understand, to move before the whole road is visible, to trust the character of the One giving the instruction rather than waiting until the instruction makes complete sense. Think about the stories of Scripture. Noah built a massive boat before a single drop of rain had fallen. Abraham left home for a land he had never seen. The disciples left their fishing nets immediately when Jesus called. None of them had full information. They had relationship — and they responded to the voice of the One they trusted. Obedience is not blind. It is not reckless. It is grounded in a relationship with a God whose track record is flawless and whose character is entirely trustworthy. When you understand who God is — His wisdom, His love, His faithfulness — obeying Him becomes less about the specific instruction and more about the relationship. You obey because you know Him and you trust Him. And over time, you often discover that His instruction made perfect sense — you just could not see it from where you were standing when He asked. Today, is there something God has asked of you that you have been putting off until it makes more sense? Take the step.

John 14:15

"If you love me, keep my commands."

Today's Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the times I have made my understanding the condition for my obedience. Help me to trust You enough to move when You speak, even when I cannot see the full picture. I choose to love You by obeying You today. Amen.

Today's Action Step

Identify one instruction from Scripture or a clear prompting from God that you have been postponing. Take the first concrete step of obedience today.
