Poured Out for Love

When a woman broke an alabaster jar of expensive perfume and poured it over Jesus's head, the room erupted. The disciples called it a waste — a poor use of something valuable. Jesus called it beautiful. "She has done a beautiful thing to me," He said. This unnamed woman is the opening image of August's theme: poured out. She did not give Jesus a portion of her perfume and keep the rest for later. She broke the jar. There was no going back, no holding back, no portion preserved for herself. It was all — and it was for Him. This extravagant act scandalized the people around her because it made no economic sense. But worship rarely makes economic sense. Worship operates in a different currency — the currency of love and devotion. And love, when it is genuine, does not carefully calculate the cost before giving. The alabaster jar represents whatever is most precious to you. Your time. Your plans. Your comfort. Your reputation. Your security. The invitation of this month is to consider what you have been holding back from God — what you have been careful not to pour out too freely. The woman's act of worship has been told throughout the world for two thousand years. Jesus said it would be. What looked like a waste became a legacy. What looked like extravagance became an eternal story. Your fully surrendered life will never be a waste. Every drop poured out for God produces something beyond what you can calculate. Begin August by asking: what is in my alabaster jar? And am I willing to break it?

Mark 14:3

"While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head."

Today's Prayer

Lord, I want to pour my life out for You — not carefully, not partially, but completely. Help me to see my surrender not as loss but as worship. Break the jar of my self-preservation and let my life flow freely toward You and toward others. Amen.

Today's Action Step

Identify one thing you have been holding back from God. Write it down and offer it to Him today with a simple prayer of surrender.
