Isaiah 58:10-11 contains a stunning promise about what happens to people who give generously: "If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame." Spend yourselves. The image is of pouring out, of spending down your reserves for the sake of others who are in need. And what happens to the person who does this? They are not depleted. They are renewed. Their light rises. Their night becomes noonday. They are guided, satisfied, and strengthened. This is one of the great paradoxes of the kingdom of God: the more you pour out, the more you are filled. The more you spend yourself for others, the more alive and energized you feel. It is the opposite of what the world expects. The world says that self-care comes before service. That you have to fill up first before you can give anything out. But Scripture suggests something more dynamic: that the act of giving opens channels through which God pours more in. Not that self-care is wrong — rest, renewal, and tending to your own soul are essential. But the person who hoards their resources out of fear will find themselves surprisingly empty, while the person who gives freely out of trust finds a seemingly inexhaustible supply. God does not let His servants run dry. He guides them always. He satisfies their needs. He strengthens their frame. Renewal comes in the pouring, not just in the resting.
