Seeking First the Kingdom

Jesus told His followers that anxiety is often the result of misplaced priorities. In the Sermon on the Mount, He addressed the worry that comes from chasing security in the wrong places — food, clothing, financial stability. His solution was not to ignore those needs but to reorder the priorities that drive our pursuit of them: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Seeking first is a practice, not just a principle. It means that at the beginning of your day, before you check your phone, respond to emails, or plan your schedule, you orient yourself toward God. Before you figure out how to solve your problems, you invite God into them. Before you pursue what you need, you pursue the One who knows what you need. The promise at the end of the verse is stunning in its scope: "all these things will be given to you." The context is everyday provisions — food, clothing, shelter. Jesus is saying that the person who makes God's kingdom their first pursuit does not end up lacking. The God who clothes the lilies of the field and feeds the birds of the air is more than capable of meeting the needs of His children. But the promise only makes sense in the context of the priority. It is not "seek the kingdom and also pursue security with equal energy." It is "seek first the kingdom, and then trust Me with everything else." This kind of first-seeking requires actual faith — the belief that God is trustworthy enough to handle the things you are releasing to Him. Start each morning this week with a simple prayer: "God, I seek Your kingdom first today." Watch how it changes your anxiety level.

Matthew 6:33

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Today's Prayer

Father, I want to seek Your kingdom first — genuinely, not just in theory. Help me to organize my life around Your priorities and to trust You with the things I so often worry about. You know what I need. You have always provided. I trust You today. Amen.

Today's Action Step

For the rest of this week, spend the first five minutes of your morning seeking God before looking at your phone. Make it a new first-seeking habit.
