Staying Focused in a Distracted World

Hebrews 12:1-2 paints a powerful picture: "Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith." The language is athletic. A runner who wants to win does not carry extra weight. He strips off everything that slows him down and keeps his eyes on the finish. The writer applies this image to the Christian life — specifically to staying focused and aligned. We live in the most distracted era in human history. The average person unlocks their phone dozens of times a day. Our attention is pulled in a hundred directions simultaneously. And while technology and busyness are not sins, they can become the "weights" that hinder us from running well. A weight is not necessarily a sin — it is anything that slows you down spiritually. It could be entertainment that has become excessive. Relationships that are draining without producing fruit. A habit that consumes time that could go toward something eternal. An ambition that has subtly replaced God as the center. The solution Hebrews gives is not a list of rules but a direction: fix your eyes on Jesus. Focus is not primarily about what you eliminate. It is about what you keep looking at. When Jesus is the consistent object of your gaze, distractions lose their grip naturally. Not because life gets quieter, but because the signal is so clear that the noise fades to the background. What are you looking at most today? What has most of your mental and emotional attention? Whatever has your focus has your life. Fix your eyes on Jesus. Run your race with everything you have.

Hebrews 12:1-2

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

Today's Prayer

Jesus, help me to fix my eyes on You today — not on my problems, not on distractions, not on what others are doing. Be the center of my focus and my motivation. Show me anything I am carrying that is slowing me down, and give me the courage to lay it aside. Amen.

Today's Action Step

Identify one distraction that regularly pulls your focus from God — social media, entertainment, worry — and set a specific limit on it today. Use the reclaimed time for prayer or Scripture.
