The Priority Test

Jesus cut through every complicated debate about purpose and priorities with a single sentence: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." In context, He had been addressing anxiety about basic needs — food, clothing, shelter. His point was striking: the people who make God's kingdom their first priority do not end up empty-handed. God, who clothes the lilies and feeds the sparrows, knows exactly what His children need. The word "first" is not incidental. It is the whole point. Jesus is not saying that other things do not matter. He is saying that what comes first shapes everything else. When God is first, your other priorities tend to fall into their proper order. But when anything else — career, comfort, relationships, ambition — moves into that first position, even good things start creating chaos. A practical way to apply this today is what you might call the Priority Test: When you are making decisions about your time, your money, your energy, and your attention, which question comes first? Is it "What do I want?" or "What does God want?" Is it "What makes sense to me?" or "What aligns with His kingdom?" This is not about being passive or losing your personality. God made you with desires, dreams, and specific abilities. But those flourish best when they are submitted to His kingdom first. The promise Jesus makes is remarkable — seek first, and "all these things" will be added to you. Not as a reward for obedience, but as the natural overflow of a life rightly ordered. When the main thing is the main thing, the other things tend to find their place.

Matthew 6:33

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Today's Prayer

Lord, help me to seek Your kingdom first — before my comfort, before my preferences, before my plans. Reorder my priorities today so that what matters most to You becomes what matters most to me. And help me to trust that You will take care of everything else. Amen.

Today's Action Step

Look at your schedule for the next three days. Identify one block of time where you could prioritize prayer, Scripture, or serving someone else — and protect it.
