The Refilling of the Spirit

Acts 4:31 records a moment of spiritual renewal in the early church that is both remarkable and instructive: "After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly." The disciples had already been filled with the Spirit at Pentecost in Acts 2. But here they are, in Acts 4, being filled again. Why? Because they came back to prayer. Because they gathered together in the face of opposition and poured out their hearts before God. And God responded by shaking the room and filling them afresh. This is an important corrective for people who treat the filling of the Spirit as a one-time event. Yes, the Spirit lives in you permanently when you come to faith in Christ. But the experience of being Spirit-filled — walking in the power, joy, and boldness that comes from active dependence on Him — is renewed through ongoing prayer and surrender. Think of the Spirit's filling like breathing. You do not breathe once and live on it. You breathe continuously. The inhale is the ongoing act of receiving — through prayer, worship, Scripture, and community. The exhale is giving out — serving, sharing, loving. Both are necessary. And when you have been exhaling a lot — serving, giving, pouring out — the refilling comes from returning to prayer. It comes from gathering with other believers and praying together. It comes from laying your needs and your exhaustion before God and asking again to be filled. He always answers that prayer. Come back to prayer. Be refilled.

Acts 4:31

"After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly."

Today's Prayer

Holy Spirit, fill me again today. I have been giving out and I need to receive. Come and replenish what has been poured out. Fill me with boldness, with joy, with Your presence, and with fresh power to keep going. I receive Your filling now. Amen.

Today's Action Step

If you have been running spiritually low, gather with at least one other believer this week — in person or by phone — and pray together. The refilling often comes in community.
