The Well That Never Runs Dry

Jesus sat with a Samaritan woman at a well — a woman who had been drawing water from the same well, in the same place, with the same thirst, for years. And He offered her something entirely different: "Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life." A spring, not a bucket. Not something you draw up from outside yourself and carry until it runs out. A spring — welling up from inside, self-replenishing, inexhaustible. This is what life in Christ is designed to feel like. Not constantly running back to refill an empty bucket from external sources, but carrying an internal source of life that never runs out. Many people live the Christian life like they are carrying a bucket. They get filled up on Sunday, and by Wednesday the bucket is empty. So they limp back the following Sunday for another fill. This cycle is exhausting and unsustainable. Jesus is describing something richer. A life so connected to His Spirit that the well is always replenishing from within. This kind of internal fullness comes from abiding — from maintaining a living, daily connection to Jesus through prayer, Scripture, and surrender. The woman at the well had been trying to fill a spiritual thirst with everything the world offered, and she kept running dry. When she met Jesus, she discovered the One who could satisfy what nothing else had. Whatever you have been drinking from that leaves you thirsty again — bring that thirst to Jesus today. He is the well that never runs dry.

John 4:14

"but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

Today's Prayer

Jesus, You are the living water. Where I have been drinking from sources that leave me empty, draw me back to You. Fill me from the inside — with joy, peace, and purpose that does not depend on circumstances. Be the spring that wells up in me today. Amen.

Today's Action Step

Take an honest inventory: What do you run to first when you feel emotionally or spiritually empty? Make a deliberate choice today to run to Jesus first — through prayer or Scripture — before turning to lesser sources.
