What Matters Most

Martha was busy — and for entirely good reasons. She was hosting Jesus in her home, preparing a meal, trying to make everything right. Mary, her sister, had parked herself at Jesus's feet and was simply listening. When Martha asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her, His response was gentle but revealing: "Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed — or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." Jesus was not criticizing hard work or hospitality. He was diagnosing a deeper issue: distraction from what matters most. Martha was worried and upset — not about bad things, but about too many things. And in the busyness of doing for Jesus, she had lost the posture of being with Jesus. This is one of the most common misalignments in the Christian life. We become so busy doing things for God — serving, volunteering, planning, producing — that we neglect the thing that sustains all of it: time at His feet. The Christian life was never meant to be a performance for God. It was meant to flow from a relationship with God. When the relationship is primary, the service that flows from it is full of life and joy. When service becomes primary and relationship becomes secondary, we end up like Martha — doing all the right things for all the right reasons but worried, upset, and running on empty. What has become the "one thing" in your life lately? Is it busyness or presence? Activity or intimacy? Today, before you do anything else for God, take time to be with Him. Choose the better thing — it will not be taken from you.

Luke 10:41-42

"'Martha, Martha,' the Lord answered, 'you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.'"

Today's Prayer

Lord, forgive me for being so busy doing things for You that I neglect being with You. Pull me back to Your feet today. Help me to choose the better thing — to sit, to listen, to be present with You before I rush into doing. Amen.

Today's Action Step

Set a timer for 15 minutes today and do nothing but read Scripture and sit quietly with God — no journaling, no planning, no agenda. Just be with Him.
