When Life Gets Out of Sync

Psalm 37:23 says something both comforting and convicting: "The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him." Most people focus on the second half — the firm steps, the stability, the security of walking a path God has established. But the first half is easy to rush past: "who delights in him." The steps become firm not simply because God is powerful enough to make them so, but because there is a relationship at the foundation. Delight in God is not a theological concept — it is a relational posture. It means finding your genuine joy and satisfaction in who God is, not just in what He can do for you. When we lose alignment in life, it is rarely because God disappeared. It is usually because we stopped delighting in Him. We started delighting in other things — our plans, our comfort, our control — and slowly the connection between our direction and His shifted. We drift before we derail. The good news is that getting back into alignment is never complicated, even when it is difficult. It starts with returning to delight — to the practice of enjoying God, spending unhurried time with Him, worshiping not out of obligation but out of genuine love. When delight is restored, steps become firm again. Not because life suddenly gets easier, but because you are once again moving in the same direction as the One who holds the path. If your life feels out of sync today — if your schedule, your priorities, or your relationships seem to be pulling in different directions — start with this: come back to delight. What did it look like when you were closest to God? Return there. The firm steps will follow.

Psalm 37:23

"The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him;"

Today's Prayer

Lord, I want to delight in You — not just in what You provide, but in who You are. Where my life has drifted out of sync, draw me back to You. Make my steps firm again as I return to genuine relationship with You. Amen.

Today's Action Step

Write down three things about God's character — not things He has done for you, but who He is — and spend a few minutes thanking Him specifically for those qualities.
