When Plans Change
Proverbs 16:9 is one of those verses that feels like a gentle but firm hand on the shoulder: "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps." We are planners by nature. We make five-year plans, monthly budgets, daily to-do lists, and life goals. Planning is not wrong — in fact, wisdom often requires it. But Proverbs 16:9 inserts a humbling truth into all of that planning: God is the one who ultimately establishes where our steps land. Most of us have experienced a plan that changed. A job that fell through. A relationship that did not go where we expected. A season of life that arrived without warning and rerouted everything. And in those moments, the invitation is to remember that God was never surprised by the change — even when we were. His establishing of our steps is not indifferent to our planning. He works through our efforts, our decisions, and our intentions. But He also works through the changes, the detours, and the unexpected moments. Some of the greatest growth in a person's life happens not when everything goes according to plan but when it does not — and they choose to trust God in the middle of the disruption. The key word in the verse is "establishes." God does not just allow our steps — He establishes them. That means what feels like a detour may actually be the road. What feels like a setback may be a setup for something better. What feels like a door closing may be God redirecting you toward a door you would never have found on your own. Hold your plans loosely today. Not passively — but with open hands. Make your plans, seek God's wisdom, and then trust Him with what He does with them.
Proverbs 16:9
"In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps."
Today's Prayer
Lord, I bring You my plans today and hold them open-handed before You. Where they align with Your purposes, bless them. Where they need to change, redirect me gently. Help me to trust Your establishing of my steps more than I trust my own planning. Amen.
Today's Action Step
Look at one plan or goal you are holding tightly right now. Pray specifically over it today, offering it to God and asking Him to establish your steps in that area.

Hope.
Healing.
Empowerment.
