Paul wrote something from prison that sounds almost exuberant: "But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you." Poured out like a drink offering. In the Old Testament, a drink offering was poured completely out onto the altar — it was consumed, absorbed, gone. Nothing was recovered from it. And Paul, facing the possibility of execution, describes his life in exactly those terms — and then says he is glad about it. How is that possible? Because Paul had completely reframed the purpose of his life. He was not living to preserve himself, to build his own legacy, or to maximize personal comfort. He was living as an offering — poured out for the faith of other people. And in that posture, even suffering made sense because it was being invested in something eternal. This is the destination of the poured-out life: the place where you genuinely see your life not as something to protect but as something to give. Where your existence is offered not for your own enrichment but for the enrichment of others and the glory of God. Most of us are somewhere on the journey toward that posture. We catch glimpses of it in our best moments — when we give sacrificially and feel the deep rightness of it, when we serve without reward and find unexpected joy. Paul invites us to let those moments become the whole story. To offer not just our surplus but our whole life. To be poured out completely — and to find, as he did, that it is reason for gladness.
